Type M Copper Pipe: The Pinhole Leak Problem

Type M Copper Pipe: The Pinhole Leak Problem Homeowners Don’t Know About

Copper pipe comes in a few different wall thicknesses, designated by letter: Type K (thickest), Type L (medium), and Type M (thinnest). All three carry water safely when installed correctly, but Type M’s thinner wall gives it noticeably less material to absorb internal corrosion before it develops a leak — which is exactly the pattern we see repeatedly in homes with recurring pinhole leaks.

Why Type M Develops Pinhole Leaks More Often

Pinhole leaks in copper pipe typically start as small areas of internal pitting corrosion, caused by a combination of water chemistry factors — pH, dissolved oxygen, chlorine levels, and water velocity inside the pipe. Every type of copper pipe is susceptible to this to some degree, but Type M’s thinner wall means a given amount of internal pitting reaches all the way through the pipe wall faster than it would in Type L or Type K. In homes where several pinhole leaks show up in different locations over a few years, Type M copper piping installed during that era is very often the underlying factor.

If You’ve Already Had One Pinhole Leak

A single pinhole leak doesn’t necessarily mean the whole system is failing — it could be an isolated defect or a specific stress point. But if it’s Type M copper and you’ve had more than one leak, it’s worth asking whether a spot repair is really the long-term answer, or whether a full reroute makes more sense before the third or fourth leak shows up. This is exactly the kind of situation we walk homeowners through during a slab leak inspection — not just fixing today’s leak, but being honest about what the pipe material tells us about tomorrow’s risk.

Not sure what type of copper is in your walls? A licensed plumber can usually identify it from an exposed section, or during a repair when the pipe is already open.
