Will a Water Leak Stop on Its Own?
No. A water leak in a pressurized supply line doesn’t self-repair, and in almost every case, it gets worse over time rather than better. It’s a common hope — especially with a small, barely-noticeable leak — but understanding why leaks don’t stop helps explain why waiting almost always costs more than acting.
Why Leaks Get Bigger, Not Smaller
A pinhole leak in a copper pipe starts as a small area of corrosion or pitting on the interior wall of the pipe. Water under pressure continuously erodes that weak point, widening it over time — slowly at first, then often more quickly as the hole enlarges and lets more water through, which accelerates the erosion further. A leak that starts as a barely perceptible drip can become a significant, damaging flow within weeks or months.
The same logic applies to cracks in PVC or PEX fittings, loose joints, and most other leak sources: the mechanical stress and constant water pressure work against the weak point, not in its favor.
What Waiting Actually Costs
The direct cost is your water bill, which climbs as the leak grows. The bigger risk is what the water does while it’s running: saturating soil under a foundation, soaking insulation and drywall, creating ideal conditions for mold within one to two weeks of sustained moisture, and in slab leak cases, potentially contributing to foundation movement over a long enough timeline. The One Exception
A leak can appear to “stop” if the water source is cut off — for example, if you shut off an irrigation valve and the leak was actually in that zone. That’s not the leak healing, though; it’s just no longer pressurized. The underlying damage to the pipe or fitting is still there, and it will leak again the moment that section is pressurized again.
