What Is Leak Detection?
A plain-language explanation of what the service actually is, before you decide whether you need it.
The Short Definition
Leak detection is the process of confirming a water leak exists and pinpointing its exact location, without having to open walls, tear up flooring, or excavate blindly to find it. It’s a distinct skill and service from plumbing repair — the goal is locating the problem accurately, so whatever repair follows is as small and targeted as possible.
This matters because leaks are frequently invisible by nature — running inside walls, under concrete slabs, or in buried pipe between the street and the house. Without proper detection, the alternative is guessing, which usually means far more demolition than necessary, or worse, fixing the wrong thing.
The Methods, Briefly
- Pressure testing — confirms whether a leak exists and roughly where
- Acoustic detection — listens for the sound of escaping water through concrete or soil
- Thermal imaging — detects temperature differences from hot water line leaks
- Electronic detection — traces buried pipe routes and depth using electromagnetic signals
Most real inspections combine two or more of these methods rather than relying on just one, since each catches something the others might miss.
