Step One: The Water Meter Test
Before anything else, this five-minute test tells you whether water is moving anywhere on your property right now:
- Make sure every fixture in the house is off — faucets, ice maker, washing machine, sprinklers, everything.
- Find your water meter and locate the small leak-indicator dial or triangle — it’s usually the smallest dial on the face.
- Watch it for a minute or two. If it’s moving at all with nothing running, water is escaping somewhere on your property.
- If it’s not moving, wait an hour and check your meter reading again, then compare — this catches slower leaks the small dial might miss.
This test tells you whether there’s a leak. It doesn’t tell you where — that’s where professional detection comes in.

1. A Running Toilet
A worn flapper valve can silently leak hundreds of gallons a day with no visible sign. Drop food coloring in the tank and check the bowl after 15 minutes without flushing — color in the bowl means it’s leaking.

3. An Underground Water Line Leak
A leak in the buried line between the meter and your house. Look for a soggy patch of lawn or a sinkhole with no rain to explain it.

A cracked sprinkler line or a valve stuck partially open can run for weeks unnoticed, especially on zones you don’t walk through often.
5. A Sewer Lateral Issue
