How Thermal Imaging Actually Works

A thermal imaging camera detects surface temperature differences, displaying them as a color-coded image where warmer areas show up differently than cooler ones. When a hot water line develops a leak under a slab or behind a wall, the escaping hot water raises the surface temperature of the surrounding concrete or drywall — often by a degree or two, sometimes more, depending on how long the leak has been running.

That temperature difference is frequently too subtle to feel by hand but shows up clearly on a thermal camera, which is why it’s especially effective for hot water line leaks specifically — the same physical principle doesn’t apply the same way to a cold water leak, where there’s much less temperature contrast with the surrounding material.
